This article provides you with current healing facts on the prevention, recognition, and rehabilitation of separate illnesses that might influence you while you travel to South East Asia, as well as other condition issues affecting travelers to high astronomical regions of the world. facts content is designed for the use of physicians and non-physicians alike. It is best to consult your travel agent or general physician well before departure to ensure that you fulfill the immunization requirements. The immunizations you need may be greatly influenced by the nature of your trip. For example, a trip only to urban areas may require less safety than a visit also provocative rural areas. Your general physician should be able to furnish more information.
This facts is intended for advice purposes only.
During the winter months, colds are probably the most coarse illness in South East Asian Countries, and within a few days of arriving in the cities, most citizen have either industrialized a full-blown cold or have industrialized the city cough. This latter malady is brought on by the dust and smog that plague these cities.
The dust can be very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Some citizen select to wear aspirators (face masks) or bandannas to keep out the dust. Face masks are sold in approximately every pharmacies and other shops frequented by tourists. Though a cold is likely the worst thing that you’ll come down with in these countries, there are quite a few other illnesses you should know about and take precautions against.
Food Poisoning: Salmonella is the most coarse cause of food poisoning during your travel. It is caused by a bacteria found in chickens and therefore in egg products. Fresh-cooked eggs are rarely a problem, but dishes such as cheesecake and meringue pie commonly sustain the growth of salmonella. It’s best to avoid these two treats. The symptoms of salmonella are severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and chills. Luckily, these all pass within 24 hours. Anti-diarrheal drugs such as codeine, Imodium, and Lomotil should never be taken if salmonella poisoning is suspected. To treat salmonella, drink as much liquid as possible.
Bacterial Diarrhea: Of all the inherent causes of diarrhea, bacterial infection is by far the most common. This is caused by a proliferation of a usually inoffensive form of E. Coli bacteria. Because E. Coli has industrialized a resistance to the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Smz-Tmp), which is marketed in the United States under the trade names of Septra and Bactrim, the most coarse way to treat bacterial diarrhea is with Norfloxacin or Ciprofloxacin (both easily available).
Amoebic Dysentery: Though this is one of the most dreaded of diseases among travelers to the tropics, amoebas can be admittedly treated if diagnosed. The qoute is that amoebas are often difficult to detect. If left untreated, they will migrate to the liver and cause damage, so it is very important that you let your physician know that amoebic dysentery is a possibility should you form diarrhea after leaving these Countries. Symptoms of amoebic dysentery include abdominal pain, diarrhea (frequently with blood or pus in the stool), lethargy, and fever. The recommended rehabilitation for amoebic dysentery is tinidazole. In the United States, where tinidazole is not available, Flagyl is the recommended drug.
Giardiasis: another cause of long-term diarrhea, giardiasis is caused by a protozoan and is quite common. Giardiasis is spread by water and food that has been contaminated with the cysts of the giardia organism; it has an incubation duration of 7 days. Therefore, if you form diarrhea on your second or third day of Traveling South Asian Subcontinent, giardiasis is not the cause. coarse symptoms of giardiasis are a violent bubbling in the intestines accompanied by pain in the upper part of the abdomen. Diarrhea may come and go and often occurs only in the morning. Should you form diarrhea after returning home, it is important that you tell your physician that giardiasis is a possibility. In the United States, giardiasis is usually treated with the drug Flagyl, but in south Asia, the recommended rehabilitation is tinidazole (marketed as Tiniba).

The following vaccinations are recommended: typhoid, tetanus, diphtheria, and polio. Also, if you were born after January 1, 1957, you should make sure you have been immunized against measles. Malaria tablets (if you are visiting the Terai), the hepatitis A vaccine, and a vaccination against meningococcal meningitis are also advised.
Thing you must know
The majority of illnesses are spread by unsanitary conditions, particularly contaminated water. Consequently, it is important to take special precautions to ensure that your drinking water is safe. The best precaution is not to drink any water unless you have purified it yourself, or know that it has been boiled. Do not drink tap water; even bottled water if the seal is broken, especially out on the trekking routes, are sometimes refilled with unsafe water.

The Whey to Weight Loss!
Regular readers of my work have come to expect articles about the power of whey proteins to potentially fight cancer and improve immunity among its many benefits. The ability of whey to fight cancer, improve glutathione levels and immunity, is well documented.
Additional explore suggests potential healing uses for whey that are quite unexpected and different from whey’s traditional role as an immune booster and anti cancer functional food. For example, whey may be able to reduce stress and lower cortisol and growth brain serotonin levels, improve liver function in those suffering from clear forms of hepatitis, reduce blood pressure, as well as other splendid new discoveries, such as whey’s potential effects on weight loss, which is the focus of this article.
What is whey?
When we talk about whey we are really referring to a complex milk-based ingredient made up of protein, lactose, fat and minerals. Protein is the best-known component of whey and is made up of many smaller protein subfractions such as: Beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, immunoglobulins (IgGs), glycomacropeptides, bovine serum albumin (Bsa) and minor peptides such as lactoperoxidases, lysozyme and lactoferrin.
Each of the subfractions found in whey has its own unique biological properties. Modern filtering technology has improved dramatically in the past decade, allowing associates to detach some of the highly bioactive peptides -such as lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase-from whey.
Some of these subfractions are only found in very miniature amounts in cow’s milk, commonly at less than one percent (e.g., lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, etc.)
The remedial properties of whey have been known for centuries. For example, an expression from Florence, Italy. Circa 1650, was “Chi vuol viver sano e lesto beve scotta e cena presto” which translates into English as “If you want to live a wholesome and active life, drink whey and dine early.”
Another expression from Italy with regard to the benefits of whey (circa 1777) was “Allevato con la scotta il dottore e in bancarotta.” Which translates into English “If everyone were raised on whey, doctors would be bankrupt.”
Is whey a weight loss functional food?
A few years ago, I might have said no. Now I am not so sure. Although there was a smattering of studies suggesting whey had clear properties that might support with weight loss, a whole of new studies appear to supplementary support the use of whey as a potential weight loss supplement. Most thoughprovoking – at least to nerds like me – the result appears to be not by a particular mechanism, but several. This article will briefly eye a few potential pathways by which whey may support the dieter.
“I’m hungry!”
Human hunger and appetite are regulated by a phenomenally complex set of overlapping feedback networks, thoughprovoking a long list of hormones, psychological factors as well as physiological factors, all of which are still being elucidated. It’s a very arduous area of explore right now, with various pharmaceutical associates seeing for that “magic bullet” weight loss breakthrough they can bring to market.
One hormone getting concentration by researchers seeing for potential solutions to obesity is cholecystokinin (Cck). Several decades ago, researchers found Cck largely responsible for the feeling of fullness or satiety experienced after a meal and partially controls appetite, at least in the short term.
Cholecystokinin (Cck) is a small peptide with complicated functions in both the central nervous principles and the periphery (via Cck-B and Cck-A receptors respectively). Along with other hormones, such as pancreatic glucagon, bombesin, glucagon-like peptide-1, amide (Glp-1), oxyntomodulin, peptide Yy (Pyy) and pancreatic polypeptide (Pp)., Cck is released by ingested food from the gastrointestinal tract and mediates satiety after meals.
Such a list would not be perfect without at least production mention of what many researchers consider the “master hormones” in this milieu, which is insulin and leptin. If that’s not confusing enough, release of these hormones depends on the concentration and aggregate of the nutrients ingested.
That is, the type of nutrients (i.e., fat, protein, and carbohydrates) eaten, the whole of each eaten, and aggregate of the meal, all result which hormones are released and in what amounts…Needless to say, it’s a topic that gets real complex real fast and the exact roles of all the variables is far from fully understood at this time, though huge strides have been made recently.
Whey’s effects on food intake.
This (finally!) brings us to whey protein. Whey may have some unique effects on food intake via its effects on Cck and other pathways. Many studies have shown that protein is the most satiating macro-nutrient. However, it also appears all proteins may not be created equal in this respect.
For example, two studies using human volunteers compared whey vs. Casein (another milk based protein) on appetite, Cck, and other hormones (Hall Wl, Millward Dj, Long Sj, Morgan Lm.Casein and whey exert different effects on plasma amino acid profiles, gastrointestinal hormone secretion and appetite. Br J Nutr. 2003 Feb;89(2):239-48).
The first study found that vigor intake from a buffet meal ad libitum was significantly less 90 minutes after a liquid meal containing whey, compared with an equivalent whole of casein given 90 minutes before the volunteers were allowed to eat all they wanted (ad libitum) at the buffet. In the second study, the same whey preload led to a plasma Cck growth of 60 % ( in addition to large increases in glucagon-like peptide [Glp]-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) following the whey preload compared with the casein.
Translated, taking whey before people were allowed to eat all they wanted (ad libitum) at a buffet showed a decrease in the whole of calories they ate as well as large increases in Cck compared to casein. Subjectively, it was found there was greater satiety followed the whey meal also.
The researchers accomplished “These results implicate post-absorptive increases in plasma amino acids together with both Cck and Glp-1 as potential mediators of the increased satiety response to whey and emphasize the significance of considering the impact of protein type on the appetite response to a mixed meal.” Several animal studies also find whey appears to have a pronounced result on Cck and or satiety over other protein sources.
It should be noted however that not all studies have found the result of whey vs. Other protein sources on food intake (Bowen J, Noakes M, Clifton P, Jenkins A, Batterham M.Acute result of dietary proteins on appetite, vigor intake and glycemic response in overweight men. Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2004;13(Suppl):S64.).
It should also be noted that although studies find protein to be the most satiating of the macro-nutrients, clear protein sources (e.g. Egg whites) may really growth appetite (Anderson Gh, Tecimer Sn, Shah D, Zafar Ta. Protein source, quantity, and time of consumption conclude the result of proteins on short-term food intake in young men. J Nutr. 2004 Nov;134(11):3011-5.), so protein sources appear worth considering when seeing to maximize weight loss and suppress appetite.
How whey achieves this result is not fully understood, but explore suggests it’s due to whey’s high glycomacropeptide and alpha-lactalbumin content, as well as its high solubility compared to other proteins, and perhaps it’s high percentage of subject chain amino acids (Bcaa’s).
Whey’s effects on bodyfat, insulin sensitivity, and fat burning….
So we have some studies suggesting whey may have some unique effects on hormones complex in satiety and or may reduce vigor (calorie) intake of subsequent meals, but do we have studies showing direct effects of whey vs. Other proteins on weight loss? In animals at least, whey has looked like a promising supplement for weight loss.
Although higher protein diets have been found to improve insulin sensitivity, and may be first-rate for weight loss (with some debate!) then higher carbohydrate lower protein diets, it’s unclear if all proteins have the same effects.
One study compared whey to beef (Damien P. Belobrajdic,, Graeme H. McIntosh, and Julie A. Owens. A High-Whey-Protein Diet Reduces Body Weight Gain and Alters Insulin Sensitivity Relative to Red Meat in Wistar Rats. J. Nutr. 134:1454-1458, June 2004) and found whey reduced body weight and tissue lipid levels and increased insulin sensitivity compared to red meat.
Rats were fed a high-fat diet for nine weeks, then switched to a diet containing either whey or beef for an supplementary six weeks. As has commonly been found in other studies, the move to a high dietary protein reduced vigor intake (due to the known satiating effects of protein compared to carbs or fat), as well as reductions in visceral and subcutaneous bodyfat.
However, the rats getting the whey, there was a 40% allowance in plasma insulin concentrations and increased insulin sensitivity compared to the red meat. Not surprisingly, the researchers accomplished “These findings support the conclusions that a high-protein diet reduces vigor intake and adiposity and that whey protein is more effective than red meat in reducing body weight gain and addition insulin sensitivity.”
Other studies advise taking whey before a workout is first-rate for preserving/gaining lean body mass (Lbm) and maintaining fat burning (beta oxidation) during practice over other foods taken prior to a workout. The study called “A preexercise lactalbumin-enriched whey protein meal preserves lipid oxidation and decreases adiposity in rats” (Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 283: E565-E572, 2002.) came to some very thoughprovoking conclusions.
One thing we have known a long time is the aggregate of the pre-exercise meal will sway substrate utilization during practice and thus might sway long-term changes in body weight and composition. That is, depending on what you eat before you workout can dictate what you use for vigor (i.e. Carbs, fats, and or proteins) which alters what you burn (oxidize) for energy.
The researchers took groups of rats and made the poor buggers practice two hours daily for over five weeks (talk about over training!), either in the fasted state or one hour after they ingested a meal enriched with a straightforward sugar (glucose), whole milk protein or whey protein.
The results were quite telling. Compared with fasting (no food), the glucose meal increased glucose oxidation and decreased lipid oxidation during and after exercise. Translated, they burned sugar over body fat for their vigor source. In contrast, the whole milk protein and whey meals preserved lipid oxidation and increased protein oxidation. Translated, fat burning was maintained and they also used protein as a fuel source.
Not surprisingly, the whey meal increased protein oxidation more than the whole milk protein meal, most likely due to the fact that whey is thought about a “fast” protein that is absorbed rapidly due to it’s high solubility.
As one would expect, by the end of the five weeks, body weight was greater in the glucose, whole milk protein and whey fed rats than in the fasted ones. No shock there. Here is where it gets interesting: In the group getting the glucose or the whole milk protein, the growth in weight was from bodyfat, but in the whey fed group, the growth in weight was from an growth in muscle mass and a decrease in bodyfat!
Only the rats getting the whey before their workout increased muscle mass and decreased their bodyfat. The researchers theorized this was due to whey’s ability to rapidly deliver amino acids during exercise. Is this the next big find in sports nutrition or those naturally seeing to support muscle mass loss due to aging?
Hard to say at this time being it was done in rats, but if it turns out to be true in humans (and there is no hypothesize people can’t try it now) it would really be a breakthrough in the quest to add muscle and lose fat.
Effects on serotonin, blood sugar regulation, and more!
Although the above would probably be the major mechanisms by which whey could help the dieter, there are Several secondary effects of whey that may support in weight loss. For example, whey’s effects on serotonin levels. Serotonin is probably the most studied neurotransmitter since it has been found to be complex in a wide range of psychological and biological functions. Serotonin ( also called 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-Ht) is complex with mood, anxiety, and appetite.
Elevated levels of serotonin can cause free time and reduced anxiety. Low serotonin levels are connected with low mood, increased anxiety (hence the current popularity of the Ssri drugs such as Prozac and others), and poor appetite control. This is an highly abbreviated article of all the functions serotonin performs in the human body – many of which have yet to be fully elucidated – but a full explanation is beyond the scope of this article.
Needless to say, Increased brain serotonin levels are connected with an improved ability of people to cope with stress, whereas a decline in serotonin performance is connected with depression and anxiety. Elevated levels of serotonin in the body often result in the relief of depression, as well as large allowance in pain sensitivity, anxiety and stress. It has also been theorized that a diet-induced growth in tryptophan will growth brain serotonin levels, while a diet designed for weight loss (e.g., a diet that reduces calories) may lead to a allowance of brain serotonin levels due to reduced substrate for output and a allowance in carbohydrates.
Many people on a reduced calorie intake in an exertion to lose weight find they are often ill tempered and more anxious. Reductions in serotonin may be partially to blame here. One new study (The bovine protein alpha-lactalbumin increases the plasma ratio of tryptophan to the other large neutral amino acids, and in vulnerable subjects raises brain serotonin activity, reduces cortisol concentration, and improves mood under stress. Am J Clin Nutr 2000 Jun;71(6):1536-1544) examined either alpha-lactalbumin – a major sub fraction found in whey which has an especially high tryptophan article – would growth plasma Tryptophan levels as well reduce depression and cortisol concentrations in subjects under acute stress thought about to be vulnerable to stress.
The researchers examined twenty-nine “highly stress-vulnerable subjects” and 29 “relatively stress-invulnerable” subjects using a duplicate blind, placebo-controlled study design. The study participants were exposed to experimental stress after eating a diet enriched with either alpha-lactalbumin (found in whey) or sodium-caseinate, another milk based protein. They researchers looked at:
* Diet-induced changes in the plasma Tryptophan and its ratio to other large neutral amino acids.
* Prolactin levels.
* Changes in mood and pulse rate.
* Cortisol levels (which were assessed before and after the stressor).
Amazingly, the ratio of plasma Tryptophan to the other amino acids tested was 48% higher after the alpha-lactalbumin diet than after the casein diet! This was accompanied by a decrease in cortisol levels and higher prolactin concentration. perhaps most important and relevant to the mean someone reading this article, they found “reduced depressive feelings” when test subjects were put under stress.
They accomplished that the “Consumption of a dietary protein enriched in tryptophan increased the plasma Trp-Lnaa ratio and, in stress-vulnerable subjects, improved coping ability, probably through alterations in brain serotonin.” This result was not seen in the sodium-caseinate group. If other studies can confirm these findings, whey may turn out to be yet another safe and effective supplement in the battle against depression and stress, as well as reduced serotonin levels due to dieting.
Although there is a long list of hormones complex in appetite regulation, some of which have been mentioned above, serotonin appears to be a key player in the game. In general, experiments find increased serotonin availability or performance = reduced food consumption and decreased serotonin = growth food consumption. If whey can selectively growth serotonin levels above that of other proteins, it could be very helpful to the dieter.
Other potential advantages whey may confer to the dieter is improved blood sugar regulation (Frid Ah, Nilsson M, Holst Jj, Bjorck Im. result of whey on blood glucose and insulin responses to composite morning meal and lunch meals in type 2 diabetic subjects. Am J Clin Nutr. 2005 Jul;82(1):69-75.) which is yet another key area in controlling appetite and metabolism.
Finally, calcium from dairy products has been found to be connected with a allowance in bodyweight and fat mass. Calcium is thought to sway vigor metabolism as intracellular calcium regulates fat cell (adipocyte) lipid metabolism as well as triglyceride storage. It’s been demonstrated in Several studies the superiority of dairy versus non-dairy sources of calcium for improving body composition, and the whey fraction of dairy maybe the key.
The mechanism responsible for increased fat loss found with dairy-based calcium versus nondairy calcium has not is not fully understood but researchers seeing at the issue theorized “…dairy sources of calcium markedly attenuate weight and fat gain and accelerate fat loss to a greater degree than do supplemental sources of calcium. This augmented result of dairy products relative to supplemental calcium is likely due to supplementary bioactive compounds, along with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and the rich concentration of branched-chain amino acids in whey, which act synergistically with calcium to attenuate adiposity.”
It appears components in whey – some of which have been mentioned above – are thought to act synergistically with calcium to improve body aggregate (Zemel Mb. Role of calcium and dairy products in vigor partitioning and weight management. Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 May;79(5):907S-912S.).
Conclusion
Taken in isolation, none of these studies are so compelling that people should run out and use whey as some form of weight loss nirvana. However, taken as a total picture, the bulk of the explore seems to desist that whey may in fact have some unique effects for weight loss and should be of great use to the dieter. More studies are clearly needed however.
So what is the practical application of all this information and how does the dieter put it to good use? Being the appetite suppressing effects of whey appear to last practically 2-3 hours, it would seem best to stagger the intake throughout the day. For example, morning meal might be 1-2 scoops of whey and a bowl of oatmeal, and perhaps a few scoops of whey taken in the middle of lunch and dinner.
If whey does what the data suggests it does in the above, that should be the most effective formula for maximizing the effects of whey on food (calorie) intake on subsequent meals as well as the other metabolic effects covered. If working out, the agenda may be different however and people should result the pre and post nutrition recommendations found in my other articles on the topic.

People working in hospitals, nursing homes, dental facilities and clinics are susceptible to infections and illnesses. This is because they come in direct experience with the sick patients. Though, there are plentifulness of alcohol supplies and sanitizing gels that they could use, in their haste and in the great number of patients that they need to attend to, they seldom are given the opening to stop by in their stations and get hold of all these cleaning agents.
The only way the health workers can stay fit and not succumb to illnesses is straight through frequent hand washing. But with their very hectic schedule, it would honestly do well for the healing facilities to spend in a number of transported sink units. Only by placing these on any locations in the site or construction can the healing workers be reminded to wash their hands clean as often as they can. This, in turn, can help stave off the exchange of germs, bacteria and viruses.
Lots of nurses, therapists, aides and physicians get sick not only by touching their patients but by advent in experience with infected doorknobs, rails and elevator buttons. Contagious diseases like colds, cough and flu can be acquired straight through these things. It is also primary that those who work as kitchen staffs in the hospital and nursing homes carry out frequent hand washes so that they don’t accidentally cause a hepatitis outbreak.
With transported sink units around, every person can adhere to the security and germ-free standards. When the employees see these units in place, they will be honestly prompted to soap and wash their hands clean. These units offer convenience and can be honestly accessed even in hallways, stations, near entryways and so on. What’s great is that the hospitals and clinics don’t have to spend thousands to setup plumbing units on these mentioned areas.

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. It performs numerous functions to keep your body salutary and running in optimum condition. Without it, you could not live, and there is no known medical way to make up for the lack of a liver. While the liver is a plainly very resilient organ, there are still a whole of ways in which the permissible functioning of the liver can be damaged, together with alcohol consumption, cancer, viruses, and the consumption of obvious products.
The Functions of the Liver
The liver is responsible for many things in your body, primarily:
Several processes enthralling carbohydrate metabolism
The bulk of protein metabolism
The yield of coagulation factors, which help the blood clot
The yield and secretion of bile, which emulsify fats
The breakdown of insulin
The breakdown of hemogoblin
The breakdown of toxins which would otherwise poison the body
Converting ammonia into urea, one of the main components of urine
Regeneration
The liver is unique among organs in that it is capable of regeneration. If you have as little as a quarter of a functional liver, it is capable of regenerating into a full liver over time. Full regeneration occurs in no more than eight years.
Liver Transplantation
Because the human body cannot function without a liver, liver transplantation is sometimes a principal procedure. The surgical operation was first performed by Thomas Starzl in the 1960s, but the process at the time was very imperfect. Though the process became fairly base by the late ’70s, the one-year survival rate was a dismal 25%. Now, however, after some refinements to the process and medical advances, the one-year survival rate hovers nearby 80-85%.
Unfortunately, as with all other transplants, graft rejection is a problem. That means that sometimes the human body sees the foreign object (in this case, the liver) as a danger, and the body’s immune law attacks it. To prevent this from happening, doctors will prescribe the sick person with a cocktail of drugs to prevent the body from attacking the new organ. The sick person will have to take these drugs for the rest of his or her life.

The summer of 2002, I met a young lady while quadrate dancing at a festival in Missouri. For the next 4 months we talked on the phone and once a month I would drive to Colorado to visit her. In November of 2002, she told me that for the last two weeks of January and the beginning of February she would be on a healing mission trip to India. We talked about the trip and the fact that she had gone on two other mission trips, one of which was to India and that she was seeing send to going back to India. A merge of days later she asked, “Why don’t you go with us?” I laughed because I have no healing palpate except 1st aid. We talked about the anticipation of my going and ultimately she said she would ask if there was room for a non healing man on the trip. To my surprise she called back and told me I was welcome to go along with the group, as they could all the time use help with set-up/take down and crowd control. Then she stated I would have to do a few things first.
The beginning of my odyssey: A passport. Vaccines-shots (Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B) and pills (Malaria and Typhoid). Getting time off work. What to pack to take on the trip and financial arrangements.
I started my quest about the second week of November and was told I had until the 1st week of December to confirm whether I was able to go or not. Everyone I talked to informed me that it took 6 to 8 weeks for a passport to be issued. I went to the Post Office and completed the application for the passport. I received my passport in 3 weeks. I then went to the County condition division to ask about what precautions, shots or pills, I would need for the trip to India. I was given information on all the shots and oral treatments I would need. Yes, some of that info was scary. I found out that the Hepatitis A & B shots could be given to me at the condition department. The H-A was one shot and the H-B was two shots. For the arresting of Malaria and Typhoid, I would have to get a designate from a doctor, then go to a pharmacy to fill the prescriptions. Mefloquine (Me-floe-kwin) pills were to be taken 1 week before the trip and 4 weeks after, to preclude malaria. There were 4 Typhoid (Vivotif Typhoid Cp Vac) pills, to be taken over 8 days: pill #1 then skip a day, #2 then skip a day, etc… These pills were to be kept in the refrigerator, taken with cold water and not to linger in the mouth very long. Why, I asked myself and then I asked the pharmacist. He told me the pills were a live culture and if I let the pill get hot, I could get Typhoid. This was the 1st time I obeyed the direction on medication to the T. Meanwhile, I was learning what the temperature in India (seasons) would be and what to pack. Winter and icy temperatures here in Missouri and summer in India.
As I was taking care of the healing needs and packing for the trip, there were also tour arrangements to be made from Missouri to India. While this part was by and large the accountability of P.R.O. Missions, getting us from Denver, Co to India, I still had to get from Missouri to Denver. After talking with numerous people, it was decided that to drive to Denver by pickup was cheaper than flying from Joplin to Denver. So my long journey, halfway nearby the world, had begun.

Acute liver failure is the rapid deterioration of the liver, rarely but sometimes happening in as short as two days, after the first signs of liver disease. Also referred to as hepatic disease, liver disease is a broad term for problems causing the liver to fail to accomplish its designated functions. The liver is beyond doubt an fabulous machine, as typically more than 75% of liver tissues need to be affected by liver disease before there is a noticeable decrease in function. Therefore, it is imperative that prior to acute liver failure setting in we detect the earliest signs of liver failure and then have a plan of action.
Some of the classic symptoms we may look for with liver disease are nausea and vomiting, pain in the upper right area of the abdominal region, and jaundice, or a yellowing of the skin. Listlessness, fatigue and weight loss may also occur, however until the liver becomes totally overwhelmed many of the symptoms will tend to be specific for the particular liver issue. When acute liver failure does set in, the severe health called hepatic encephalopathy takes over. Hepatic means “of the liver” and encephalopathy means “brain disorder”.
This is a very serious condition, as it means that all of the many functions that the liver carries out no longer get done. One of the liver’s main functions is to remove toxic substances before they fetch in the blood and cause body organs to start shutting down. When hepatic encephalopathy sets in, these toxins have moved to the brain, and it begins to influence mental functioning. With the toxins in the bloodstream and the brain malfunctioning, other organs will start to fail. Cirrhosis of the liver and hepatitis are most likely to cause this condition.
Early symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy could be mood and behavior changes, difficulty in speaking and writing, personality changes and decreased attentiveness span. As the disease progresses, obscuring and disorientation may set it, then seizures and ultimately coma. These disorders can be caused by other conditions, such as inordinate alcohol consumption, but if caused by a heavy shutdown of the liver, prompt healing medicine will be required or death will practically beyond doubt result.
The medicine of acute liver failure will depend on the issues causing the disease. The health is not easy to diagnose, and patients are commonly admitted to oppressive care units for close observation. If the cause is a drug or overconsumption of alcohol, medicine for reversing the effects will be begun. If it is because of an infection, medications can be used to hopefully reverse the effects. If the cause is liver cirrhosis, if the liver has not deteriorated too badly beginning a healthy and nutritious diet will play a vital role in getting the liver back to a functioning state.
With severe cases, synthetic lever hold may be used to clean the blood. If as a last resort the liver is too far gone, liver transplantation may be required. These are obviously very costly and a new liver is not easy to find, but now the short-term survival rate with a liver transplant is more than 65%.

It’s not only women who are worried about body image in the workplace anymore, men have joined the ranks of the worried. Male liposuction is a way to improve the way men look and feel. Anything to give them an edge on the competition. While many men have thorough fitness regimes and eat nutritiously, it’s those last few pounds and the ‘six pack’ that’s the goal. Anything over 40 will have a harder time with weight loss.
Male liposuction is predominately done on the abdominal. Let’s face it. If asked, most citizen would admit to some form of body image consciousness with the abdominal muscles being highest of concern. Many citizen spend most of their time on their waistline only to feel defeated. Liposuction is like instant gratification. How you see yourself in the mirror is your true self-esteem. Like women, addition waistlines can contribute to heart disease, diabetes and liver problems, male liposuction helps sacrifice these health risks.
Male liposuction targets very exact areas of the body; waist, breast, chin and thighs. It still is cosmetic surgery, but it is the fastest and least invasive. This surgical operation is out-patient and is done within a merge hours. With instant results, confidence and wide well-being are brought up. Male liposuction is also done on the face to sculpt the chin and neck area for a younger finding appearance and greater self-esteem. Men are also interested in getting rid of what they call ‘man boobs’. These are positively caused by an unnatural accumulation of fatty tissue in the male breast area. For some, this is most sufficient and leaves little to no scarring.
Still, surgical operation is surgical operation and there are risks. With male liposuction, however, the risks are low while and after the procedure. Hospital stays are only used when there is an wide number of fat withdrawn at one time. A small steel tube is used to suction the fat from the body. Having a large number of fatty tissue removed increases the risk of other organs being punctured. Therefore, it’s best to do this in small increments instead of all at once. This maximizes results and reduces risks.
The cost for men is greater than for women. The calculate is that it is harder to take off the more fibrous fat from a man. Both the waist and breast area in a man is more fibrous, this makes the policy last longer and creates a greater opportunity of complications afterwords. It’s foremost to get all data before going into cosmetic surgery. This is not something you can do on a whim, cosmetic surgical operation requires investigation to be successful.

As many as 30,000 U.S. Women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. In 2006, between 15,000 and 16,000 women are likely to die from this silent killer. Ovarian cancer is the 5th leading cause of death among women, and it is responsible for about five percent of all cancer deaths. Chances are your doctor may have misdiagnosed you. That is often the case. A recent British study found 60 percent of all U.K. Normal practitioners had misdiagnosed their patients.
Three-quarters of British doctors surveyed incorrectly assumed that symptoms only occurred in the late stages of ovarian cancer. Based upon that information, it should be no surprise that Britain has one of the bottom survival rates for ovarian cancer in the Western World – of 6,800 cases diagnosed each year, more than 4,600 die.
A similar discovery was made by University of California researchers, who announced last year, “Four in 10 women with ovarian cancer have symptoms that they tell their doctors about at least four months — and as long as one year — before they are diagnosed.” according to their study of nearly 2,000 women with ovarian cancer, the researchers discovered physicians:
o First ordered abdominal imaging or performed gastrointestinal procedures instead of the more standard pelvic imaging and/or Ca-125 (a blood test that can detect ovarian cancer).
o Only 25 percent of patients, who reported ovarian cancer symptoms four or more months before diagnosis, were given pelvic imaging or had Ca-125 blood tests.
Patients with early symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed. Abdominal imaging or diagnostic gastrointestinal studies are less likely to detect ovarian cancer. according to the American Cancer Society’s website, “The most tasteless indication of illness is back pain, followed by fatigue, bloating, constipation, abdominal pain and urinary urgency. These symptoms tend to occur very frequently and become more severe with time. Most women with ovarian cancer have at least two of these symptoms.”
By the time a woman reaches the fourth stage of ovarian cancer, her first-line rehabilitation is often Carboplatin, Paclitaxel and Cisplatin as the specific chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. In the first stage, cancer is contained inside one or both ovaries. By stage two, the cancer has spread into the fallopian tubes or other pelvic tissues, such as the bladder or rectum. When the cancer has spread face the pelvis area into the abdominal cavity, especially when tumor growths are larger than two centimeters on the lining of the abdomen, then ovarian cancer has reached stage three. The fourth and final stage of ovarian cancer is reached when the cancer has spread into other body organs, such as the liver or lungs.
If detected early, survival rates can be as high as 90 percent. Detected in the industrialized stage, the survival rate falls to between 30 and 40 percent. Assorted imaging tests such as computed tomography (Ct) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (Mri) scans, and ultrasound studies can confirm whether a pelvic mass is present. A laparoscopy can help a doctor look at the ovaries and other pelvic tissue to in order to plan out a surgical procedure, or to determine the stage of the ovarian cancer. A biopsy, or tissue sampling, would confirm if there is cancer in your pelvic region, and would help determine how industrialized it is. An elevated Ca-125 blood test typically suggests the cancer has progressed to the industrialized stage.
About 50 percent of ovarian cancer patients are already at an industrialized stage by the time a strict prognosis is made. Only 10 to 14 percent of women with industrialized cancer are likely to survive more than five years.
Evaluation of Therapies
While investigate shows drinking black (or green) tea or taking the herbal supplement gingko biloba may be useful, as a preventative measure, or to sacrifice risk, a woman has few choices when her cancer has moved to the industrialized stage. In the first stage, a woman faces surgical discharge of the tumor, and possibly one or both ovaries, to growth her chances of survival. Beyond that, her selection is chemotherapy.
One major problem with chemotherapy is the side effects. The more industrialized the cancer, the weaker one may be, reducing the survival rate potential. Survival rates have not changed very much over the past fifteen years. Chemotherapy can growth survival time by as much as 50 percent. But, quality of life suffers. The side effects and increased toxicity, with chemotherapy, sacrifice how one spends the continued survival time.
Some of Paclitaxel’s minor side effects, as reported by Medline Plus, may contain nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, change in taste, thinned or brittle hair, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, changes in the color of nails, and/or tingling in the hands or toes. More serious side effects may contain mouth blistering or fatigue. Some alarming side effects could contain unusual bleeding or bruising, dizziness, shortness of breath, severe exhaustion, chest pain, or strangeness swallowing. The most tasteless side corollary of Paclitaxel is a decrease of blood cells.
Carboplatin has its own list of side effects. It can sacrifice platelet production, which can interfere with your blood’s quality to clot. You may become anemic, feeling tired or breathless. Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and a Normal feeling of frailness are tasteless with this chemotherapeutic agent.
The most recent breed of drugs, such as Eli Lilly’s Gemzar, are hardly getting praise. On March 10th, the Food and Drug supervision (Fda) said it was skeptical of the benefits Eli Lilly’s Gemzar, which was being used with Carboplatin to treat ovarian cancer patients. The Fda felt the 2.8 months increased survival time, provided by the Gemzar/Carboplatin aggregate failed to offset the treatment’s increased toxicity.
In January, the New England Journal of rehabilitation reported on a excellent new delivery system of chemotherapy, called the “intra-abdominal, or intraperitoneal, chemotherapy. Those who received the “belly bath” as it is now being called by the media can survive 16 months longer than those receiving intravenous chemotherapy. The major drawback is that 60 percent of the women in the study were unable to complete all six cycles of this chemotherapy. Those who did survived longer, but only two in every five women were able to develop to the end phase of the therapy.
One novel approach, now in Phase Iii trials at more than 60 investigate centers across the United States, is OvaRex ® Mab, a murine monoclonal antibody, a type of biotech drug derived from mouse cells. It is being tested by highly regarded United Therapeutics, based in Silver Springs, Maryland. Their lead drug Remodulin, an injection which treats pulmonary arterial hypertension, is currently being marketed inside and face the United States. More than million has been spent researching, and on the improvement of, OvaRex and may have it available on the market by 2008.
OvaRex was industrialized in Canada by a firm called ViRexx medical Corp, and first tested in that country. according to Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, Chief administrative of ViRexx, “The whole study has been set up with the Fda. This is a study where the drug has been given fast track approval and orphan drug status.” Dr. Tyrrell is also on leave (until OvaRex become commercially available) as a Professor of medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Alberta, and Director of the National Centre of Excellence for Viral Hepatitis Research.
OvaRex was tested in Canada, prior to the current Phase Iii trials in the U.S. “There have been a number of patients that have received OvaRex,” said Dr. Tyrrell, “We’ve had undoubtedly no adverse effects from these patients.” Dr. Tyrrell explained the procedure, “After being injected intravenously, OvaRex binds to an antigen circulating in the blood.” An antibody’s Normal purpose is to neutralize an antigen. After an OvaRex injection, the murine monoclonal antibody binds to the Ca-125 antigen.
In a way the body is tricked. But, the body is tricked in order to help “save” itself from the harmful antigen. When the OvaRex antibody is bound to the Ca-125 antigen, the new aggregate is identified as a harmful unit. Before then, the antigen wanders through the body, without alerting the body’s defense systems, the dendritic cells, to charge and destroy the harmful antigen. Because the body is trained to recognize and zero in on a foreign protein, in this case a mouse protein, it alerts the dendritic cells. Until then, the dendritic cells “tolerate” the cancerous cells. The tolerance is what permits the cancer to spread throughout the body.
OvaRex seeks to break that tolerance. The murine monoclonal antibody is designed to target and bind exclusively to free floating Ca-125 antigen.
The dendritic cells refuse to tolerate the foreign protein. When the antibody binds with the free-floating antigen, the dendritic cells recognize the involved (antibody plus antigen) as being foreign and engulf the new unit. The dendritic cells break down the key proteins of this unit, presenting all parts on the cells surface. At the point, the body’s killer T-Cells are alerted to fight the internal threat to the body. Once activated, the T-Cells will replicate and originate more killer T-Cells. Any tumor cells expressing the Ca-125 antigen is targeted for destruction. The army of T-Cells move to charge the ovarian cancer tumor.
The principle behind OvaRex is to re-program the immune system to harness the body’s defenses to prevent the growth and spread of the ovarian cancer. Will it cure ovarian cancer? “In most cases, it will be a delay,” explained Dr. Tyrrell. “However, I think that, and everyone hopes that, often in some of these tumors, you’re making incremental develop through truthful clinical trials and adding new therapy. Each thing we do that improves the outcome when you start to look at the long term benefits of these, we hope that one day we will be able to cure this disease. We think this is a step. This has the possible to be an leading step at helping to stimulate immune response to accomplish a good outcome. Hopefully, one day we can enhance that to where it is a cure.”

How does a condom preclude Aids? Examined under a microscope, the surface of a latex condom has no pores. Even when stretched, it remains pore-free.
Because of this, even the tiniest of microorganisms such as the Hiv (which is between 0.09 and 0.13 microns) cannot pass straight through it. Laboratory experiments have shown that the latex condom can block germs less than one-fiftieth the size of a sperm cell (which is about 3 microns). That makes these condoms a dependable fence against sexually-transmitted diseases or Stds.
“Such an intact fence shields the wearer’s secretions or lesions. For the partner, the condom prevents sense with potentially infectious semen and any lesions on the wearer’s penis,” agreeing to the editors of consumer Reports.
“So compelling is the evidence that since 1987, the U.S. Food and Drug supervision has let manufacturers list a roster of diseases that condoms, when used properly, can help prevent: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes and Aids,” consumer Reports added.
This security increases when latex condoms are used with a vaginal spermicide. Combined with nonoxynol-9, the active ingredient in most over-the-counter spermicides, latex condoms preclude gravidity by about 95 percent and protect couples from Stds, including hepatitis B.
In some, the use of a spermicide can cause allergy or infection. When this happens, switch to a stock with a lower attentiveness of nonoxynol-9. There’s no need to worry for this low amount is also sufficient against Stds.
“Even concentrations well under one percent have inactivated the Aids virus in the lab. So nonoxynol-9 spermicides, used with a condom, can contribute something of an extra security net, should the condom break,” consumer Reports said.
In contrast, skin condoms do not offer the same protection. Unlike latex condoms, they are made in such a way that an occasional pore may be present on their surface, allowing the Aids or hepatitis B virus to slip through. For this reason, their role in disease prevention is questionable.
“Skin condoms work well as contraceptives. But apparently, because of the skin’s inherent porosity, the Fda doesn’t allow their packages to carry the disease prevention labeling that latex condoms may carry. It remains an open inquire either the skins’ relative strength outweighs their inherent to pass small microbes. In view of this uncertainty, (our) medical consultants suggest latex condoms for disease prevention,” consumer Reports said. (Next: Caring for condoms.)
